Why does engine run fine with 1ms dwell?

Post by dnz »

Set up is V3 Microsquirt installed on Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit controlling spark only at this stage (running carbs).
Inputs into unit are VR sensor on 36-1 wheel at crank speed.
Outputs are Ign 1 and Ign 2 only.
2 Coils in wasted spark configuration - 4 cylinder engine. Stock Denso coils
Using J124 Ignitor which I understand is 'Dumb' (no dwell control)

The 'issue' is that the engine seems to run very well with a dwell of 1.1ms which seems alarmingly low to me.
No matter what dwell setting I use, there does not appear to be any change in performance.
Engine runs well from idle to around 8000rpm (I haven't tried going higher at this stage) with no sync losses.

Should an engine even run with 1ms dwell?
Does the attached msq file seem odd for any reason? Ignore fuel or sensor settings as none are used.

Appreciate your help

If it is a variant of the BIM124 then it is a smart dwell.

Sounds like that may be the case. I will probably get a Quadspark module

Since last posting, I have purchased a quadspark module and absolutely nothing has changed.
Engine still runs at 1.1ms with no apparent issues. There is also no difference when increasing dwell to 2.0ms.

It is also worth noting that the quadspark module is stone cold even after a few hours of good running.

Any ideas? 1.1ms seems very low...

The burn characteristics of your engine are probably very efficient. This would also be backed up by the engine not needing a lot of timing to make power. A hard running v8 with single coil will only have around that much dwell available to it when wound right up.
