Trigger return or Time Based Cranking Settings?

Post by Michael »

My 2.0 litre Zetec , with MS1 V3 runs very well, I've been doing a bit of research to perfect its starting. Cranking timing is presently set for Trigger return, Just re-reading the manual I see the following, "Please note: VR sensor users must use "Time Based cranking" when in MSnS mode."
I'm running MsExtra, Wasted spark, (so is Msns).

Should I be using Time -Based or Trigger Return?

MSQ is latest, might have reduced ASE since logging the start logs. (Spark2 and VE3 are for LPG)

Many Thanks - Michael

You can use trigger return in Generic Wheel mode if you have the return positions set in the wheel decoder - which I see you do.

OK, Thanks Matt. What are the benefits of one system over the other?

Thanks - Michael.

Time based calculates the cranking timing from the regular trigger positions. Trigger return fires the spark when the crank wheel hits the return positions with no calculation. This is more accurate because it is not affected by how the engine speeds up or slows down, and should be used if your trigger wheel supports it. However, not all trigger wheels have a tooth in a spot that's right to fire the spark while cranking.

Thanks Matt. I'll stick with Trigger Return.

Just tried 0deg cranking advance and that seems to be an improvement. I'll try it again in the morning when its cold, might also try the "Hold Ignition" option for 2 cycles.

Best Wishes - Michael.
