ls1 coils question

Post by Yves »

I read in the manual that these have their own dwell limiting device. This apparently could lead to the coil firing at a time when you don't want it. Is it enough to set the dwell in TS to prevent this ?

Yes, just don't overdwell them and you'll be fine.

It's the big LS2 truck coils that are known for this; I haven't heard of the LS1 coils playing this game. If these coils do in fact self-limit, then yes - setting the dwell in TS below the threshold will prevent the problem.

I'm running 3.5ms under full power with a .031 plug gap. I target 300kpa at peak tq I'm not sure you would need anymore than that on an LS smart coil

If it's the lq9 style with the heat sync on top yes. I'm sure there is better documentation around, but it's been tested and anything over like 4.5ms the coil can breakdown advance and trigger. Over on the supra forums, iirc three 2j's broke down from to much timing advvance under boost

The new max dwell is in the 4.0 range but I'm having zero issues using 3.5ms

There's a lot of discussion here and on other sites. Do a search for "D585 dwell", and see what you come up with. A quick search found that the protection cuts in at 8.5A primary current, which takes around 4.x ms to achieve. There was a factory dwell chart vs voltage that should be safe; I'm on my phone so can't give a link.
