Crank and cam signal question - logs attached

Post by Yves »

I'm not used to looking at this. Does this look normal ?

I attached the csv file, datalogs and msq during this short time I had the engine idling.

Seems to hunt. Still figuring out what it's doing.

I'm wondering why the cam signal is just a line and not a tooth signal (saw tooth).
I'm using a polled cam wheel.

Sawtooth? I would think you would be expecting a square-wave. Regardless, it used to show a square-wave with a "half-moon" cam wheel, a couple of years ago, but TS was changed. If you really want to see the square-wave, you can set "Ignitions options" in TS to "log crank/cam". The engine won't run (I think), but the log produced will show you the wave-forms you are expecting.

I meant square wave. Sorry for using the wrong term

I do not want a square wave i'm just wondering because that is what the cam sensor puts out

Have you read the description of the loggers in the manual?

Yes, I'm not sure what you're pointing at here.

"Most ignition modes only listen for a single "edge" of the input signal and the composite logger will reflect that
with a series of vertical lines for each input pulse. "

Does that mean the change a couple of years ago was to MS firmware, not TS? Just curious, no problem.

Previously the comp logger would show a square-wave for the cam, when using a half-moon. At some point that changed, now showing just the "pulse". At the time of the change I posted a query but didn't get any clear response, was advised to just use the ignition-mode logger if I really needed to see the square-wave. I didn't, it was curiosity even then, so I dropped the subject. Do you want me to search for that old thread, to pin-point the date better?

Go ahead.
I'm not aware of any change.

Mostly it is a "display issue" of how TunerStudio shows the available data.

I think this is the old thread I am thinking of:

msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=50515&p=369169&hilit=square+wave#p369169

Unfortunately, it seems the log files that were attached are no longer there. Let's just drop it, it really isn't a problem.

Since I'm having a sync issue (number 2). Why is the missing tooth not showing as a long tooth but as one that has disappeared ? Is this normal ? (Hall sensor BTW)

can you post a log of the sync loss as the first one does not lose sync.

I will make a log up to the sync loss as this is apparently a possibility in TS. However I'm currently making some wiring changes which hopefully have a positive effect (put all 5V sensors over the MS to ground, currently the are grounded on the main ground line from the relay board to the engine)
