3 phase motor as a stationary load, like a rolling road

Post by dll67 »

Anyone else turned a 3 phase motor into a brake? I could use some quick and dirty ideas.
I'm thinking of using dc in one phase leg to create an eddy current... Basically an eddy brake. Then coupling that to a wheel hub to create a steady load on the car.

Do some internet searches on home dyno?

Old bus eddy-current brakes have been used before, but you need some adaptive control circuitry too.

Not to mention cooling.

I have an old heenan froude here which is a waterbrake. It takes a HUGE amount of water to cool down an even modest 300 hp.

Another thought, try connecting to a generator and use a salt water reservoir. You use a metal grid assembly that is lowered into to the liquid to absorb the electric load. Used such a set up to run in gen sets back in my apprenticeship days and the simple power absorbing device works rather nicely. Obviously the number of "Ponies" you are seeking to harness has a bearing on generator size and salt water box size. NOTE: eventually the water will boil but not that quickly.
