Erratic Idling ----> Ign Questions

Post by alexofnazareth »

Vehicle: 2002 Saturn SL1, turbo, 10.5:1 compression, stock ignition system, stock crank sensor, 80lb injectors, walbro 255 pump.

I have an MS3 installed. The vehicle is able to start and idle.
Idling with coolant temp below 110 is stable. But when it warms above that,
the idling becomes extremely erratic to the point it will stall.

I applied a small amount of throttle to keep it running, however it will continue to fluctuate. I have included the MSQ and data log to show this.

I am at a loss as to what is causing this.

I would start by turning ego correction off and add some fuel in the idle cells.

By EGO correction, are you referring to the AFR/EGO control settings?

Yes, set controller auth +/- (%) to 0 and get a stable idle.

EGO control should only be used once you have a pretty decent tune or it will chase it's own tail.

Getting the engine to idle well should be the very first step, before you ever attempt to drive the car.

How about a little information, what engine are you tuning and is it n/a or forced induction?

2002 Saturn SL1
Engine: 1.9L, 10.5:1 Compression Ratio, Forged pistons/rods.
Aspiration: Forced Induction (Medium sized precision turbo)

MS3 Controls: Fuel Inj, Idle
Stock PCM Controls: Ign, fuel pump.

I will be switching IGN over to the MS very soon. Im sure that will help keep things from being wackier than they are.

Thank you for the help!

I am assuming the stock set up for this is n/a correct?

If so then you will need to have ignition switched to MS for a timing map.

The stock ECU will not go over 100 kpa and you will need to reduce timing when in boost.

Start with getting the engine to idle then move forward.

Aye, all that is true, but I'm not ready to hit boost so the stock ign map should suffice for now. At least until I get further along on this tune.

I'll check in again tonight with a full data log after I change the afr settings.

That was it! It was not going insane on me when i turned AFR adjustment off.

So is it your recommendation that I leave it off until I get a good base map working and then flip it on?

Yes, I would leave it off until you get a decent VE tune.

Once I get the ignition switched over, what should the settings be? 0 advancement?

Are you asking about the timing map?

Yes a standard/default timing map. I will do more reading but I think other guys have run 10 deg. advanced for everything to start off.

One question I've got is how to utilized the DB15 connections to drive/control the ignition control module.

Here is a schematic:
MSII.jpg
I will be wiring everything like this, but am unsure how the #10 pin on the DB15 is accessed or used in tunerstudio for IGN output signal.

You have Spark B coming off DB37-36 to the left pin of the ICM, AND you have Spark B coming off DB15-10 to the middle pin of the ICM. Why do you have two 'Spark B' outputs? What do the various pins of the ICM represent?

Do I need to add any jumper wires in order to make use of connections at the DB15 connector?

Is there a diagram of the different configurations available?

The DB15 connector is covered in the V357 hardware manual. Most pins are unallocated ready for you to use them as you wish.

your injectors pulse width is too small and this could be the reason why the afr is moving like that.
Try to reduce the number of squirt per engine cycle.

I have looked at the hardware document. It seems I need to check to see if there is a connection between pin 1 of the BIP373 to the Spark A and B outputs [with 330R resistors].

I'll be studying to see how to confirm what settings this board has.
