Spark cut limiting not working at all?

Post by dealwithit »

So I'm setting up a ms2 v3.0 setup on a 94 chev lt-1 with an hc1 holeset. Now I've been trying to figure out this limiter setup, but the engine just blows past my set Rpm everytime if I'm only on spark cut limiting? I've tried shrinking and expanding the soft limit/hysteresis, fixed angle or progressive, from 20 to -10, and nothing happens? If I turn on the fuel cut then it limits fine, but that's not what I'm trying to accomplish. Is there some hidden setting somewhere that doesn't allow the limiter to control the coil?

Are you using EDIS HEI or TFI? Depending on how they are setup you may not be able to cut spark.
Correctly identify your MS ecu here
Read the Do's and Don'ts to avoid the common pitfalls before starting your install or asking for help
Use only these manuals other manuals may cause brain damage or worse.

Have you tried setting your soft limit closer to your hard limit try 200-300, its set at 1000 at the moment.

I'm firing the coil directly, signalling the ms directly from the optispark distributor using a basic trigger hall signal. I've tried the soft limit from 100-1000 rpm, no change.

Have you checked that your timing with a strobe and checked that it responds to changes in "Fixed Advance" ?

No I haven't, I don't have any timing marks on the pulley, they are factory set. I guess I could ad some, but the engine doesn't respond to anything from the spark limiting, I figure it would be felt, even slightly if the limiter was trying to do anything

As per the manual, checking timing with a strobe is ESSENTIAL on every install.

ok so ive been doing some testing on the stim, and im noticing that on the tunerstudio screen, it is saying spark cut in red at the specified rpm, but the ign light on the stim doesnt ever go out? i made 2 logs, only changes between them is one has retard to -10deg limiting plus spark cut, and the second is just spark cut. please let me know if theres something im missing, this is getting very annoying. thanks

I'm confused: you have the MSL files named "2" and "3", but the MSQs are "1" and "2". Which ones go together?

Check your timing.

Until you have done that it is a waste of time posting.

Really? How is it a waste of time posting, if I'm seeing the same problem on my stim as I was in the car. Verifying the timing has nothing at all to do with spark cut. This is what I'm trying to rectify.

And 2 goes with 1 and 3 goes with 2

Do you understand that there is no "spark cut", only a spark retard? Setting "off" there means the spark isn't affected by the rev-limiter at all. (Correct me if I'm wrong about that, folks!)

Edit: the log with it set for retard shows it working fine.

ok, so why does it say "spark cut limiting: on or off" which i have "on" in both logs, but my coil output on stim stays active the whole time? i can see the spark retard working fine in the logs when i have that on, but im getting no cutting of the spark output, like its supposed to. i cant be the only one having this issue. does it matter that im running on a basic trigger, cam only? the only thing that seems to happen in regards to the spark cut option, is that when i reach my hard limit, it says "spark cut" in red at the bottom of the tuner studio screen, but nothing else happens....

Yes there is definitely a spark cut option. The tool tip even says be careful not to blow up your mufflers. Does it work? I have no idea as I only use retard. I also don't have basic trigger either.
If it was an issue only on basic trigger than you might be the first to have found it. I think wheel decoder is the most common used input. What code version are you on?

Where are you seeing the "spark cut" option? It doesn't seem to be in the rev-limit menu. Is my TS just out-of-date? (See attached screen-shot)
