ford 4.6 sohc microsquirt 3

Post by mikey46 »

Hi All,
I am trying to set up a 4.6 2v npi with a megasquirt, I am not a tuner at all and have been told a wrong advance could easily kill the engine. If anyone has an advance table that's known to be good could you please let me have a copy. this is what i have come up with, which probably highlights my inexperience!

I don't see an issue with killing an engine with this SAT, very conservative.

many thanks for the reply David
as i said i am new to this, i was told to advance the timing till i hear the engine knocking then go back 1 or 2 deg but the engine is in a boat with open exhausts about 2 feet long so not sure i'll hear anything!!

I would try some light load running for a while (keeping an eye on engine temperature) then look at the plugs.

Also if you have an infrared heat gun monitor exhaust manifold temperatures, not enough timing will cause high temps.

Many thanks David,
weather permitting it will be on the water by next weekend so will give it a go. a guy on a mustang forum advised me to change the map to have lower advance at wot and higher for the rest, i have attached a copy of the new proposed settings, you said the last one i posted was conservative, do you think this is moving in the right direction?

Many thanks,

Mike.

What rpm and kpa does the engine idle?

what you have proposed there is very close to an oem 4v table. i don't know what the 2v is like compared to the 4v but i would suspect the 2v like a little more timing. also these engines have the most stable idle @15-18*.

if you want i could look at a 2v tune in binary editor and pull stock timing out for you for a car

yes, if you could post a 2v map then that would be fantastic thanks,
I am trying to idle the engine at about 650 rpm because a boat drive has no clutch and much higher than this gives it a real crunch into gear. the kpa is approx 45
i had a go at increasing the mid rev range a bit today because as far as i can tell at

100kpa 850 rpm should be 10 deg (i am assuming 850 as being the standard idle speed)
100kpa 3000 rpm should be 30 deg
47 kpa 2000 rpm should be 40 deg

this is the table i worked on today, unfortunately i did not get chance to start and do anything for real on the engine today.

I would start with the first SAT table you posted with a little more timing in the first three rpm cells.

A boat engine runs under load unless at idle so you can't use as much timing as a car.

I would not use any more than 30 to 32 degrees above 70 kpa to start with.
