The valve should be open when warmed up or the engine will idle at what ever rpm the throttle stop screw is set to.

I would guess somewhere between 20 to 40 steps would be close to idle duty.

Also I would change Power Between Steps to Always On instead of Hold Current.

That might be ok? But yes, having it slightly open means you can use it to reduce idle speed if needed. Tinkering with the throttle stop screw may be required to get a good balance, but be sure to avoid throttle plate binding.

I did not come up with this idea, I have seen this posted several times on this forum.

I am probably mistaken but I thought I say this some where in the manual also.

With it set to always on it has always worked on my installs, hold current gave me inconsistent operation.

That's my perception, "always on" gives more reliable operation (no lost steps). My guess is that "hold" uses PWM to reduce coil current to reduce heating. If there is no heating problem with your IAC motor, then go for the most positive control...
