MS2 Tuning Help MP62 Miata: cold start hard, wont idle, tune

Post by Mysticle31 »

Hey boys and girls. This car has been sitting since about 2012 when I parked it half done and went back to school. Now I've graduated and have been finishing it to drive before I start working a new job :)
I'm piecing this car together from my 4 cars worth of crap that I collected over years of owning in Miatas. I was in school and haven't looked at it in years. I was an new with MS2 then, I'm full on idiot now. I'm in WAY over my head.

Car:
  • Enhanced MS2 (You guys know of Revrant? https://mslabs.gr/)
  • 1990 Miata
  • 315cc?? Injectors. They are not stock, may even be 330cc.
  • 1.8 Engine
  • 99 NB Head
  • 95 NA Manifold
  • 1.8 Throttle Body
  • 1.8 Coils 94/95
  • Sequential Injection
  • LC1 Wideband
  • Speed Density - Temp Sensor is threaded in bottom of intake manifold, AFM is there for looks and I will delete it soon.
  • Moss MP62 with Track Dog Intercooler
Tune: Logs: Questions:
  • What do I need to do to make this thing idle and start better?
  • How is the tune in general?
  • Anyone in Sacramento area (or bay area) want to take a look and mess with it? Any shops anyone would recommend when I get some money to tune?
  • Also my tach doesnt work, I tried the resister thing they it did not solve anything. I figured this is Miata specific, I'm just mentioning it here.

I drove it recently. All the same problems. Cold starts like an cold old diesel tractor, fuel pump runs all the time, wont idle (hard to catch)...

I ran VE Analyze Live which made some changes.

Start and Warmup then drive to gas station - filled with 91 octane Shell

Drive to buddies house down the road:

Drive back to shop:

hello mate,

fellow mx5 owner here, I think I can help you somewhat.

general idle tips:
set your VE in your idle cells (usually the lowest 3x3 cells in the bottom left corner) to all the same number - don't use VEAL to tune idle - use a number that gets your idle AFR in the 13.5-14.7 region - richer idles are usually stabler and make life easier when you're startin off.
Similarly, set your ignition timing to all the same value - 10 or 14 seems to work well with our cars. Mine's set to 14.
Doing this will help stabilise you idle

Cold start - a right ball ache to tune to be honest because you only get one chance each day...
Priming pulse: vary linearly from 4 at full cold to 1 at full warm then LEAVE it!!
Cranking pulse: general tips are - if you need to press the throttle to start the car you need LESS fuel (lower pulsewidth)
If it cranks, and fires and THEN dies - you need to increase your afterstart enrichment - dont mess about here - if it's struggling to stay running, increase it by say 20% increments until it does - it does matter if it runs rich for the first few moments - you can lean out your afterstart enrichments once you have a robust starting procedure.

When the car does fire, what rpm does it rev to? You can tune this with idle cranking duty/steps - if it fires up and the revs are too high, lower these values at the particular temp until your happy - you generally need it to rev a little higher when it's cold.

I would increase your warm idle speed to 900-950rpm, 850 is a little low in my opinion
increase your dashpot adder - this will help catch a drooping idle - somewhere around 1-2% is usually enough
increase your idle activation tps threshold% to 4% - i found with it set to 1% closed loop would not engage, even if the tps was less than 1%

Like i said dont use veal to tune idle - lock these cells in the veal settings
on a cold day, fire the car up, run warmup enrichment - let the car idle all the way from cold to fully hot without touching anything. if you change your idle ve cells - you will need to re-run WUE so don't chase your tail!

Hope this helps!
