Hard starting after changing tooth input capture

Post by redphoenix »

I was having sync loss issues, so I read about input capture. I had it on rising/rising and after trying all combonations, falling/falling was the only one that I did not get sync loss. Okay, so I readjusted my timing and all is well. Except for my starting. See the 2 youtube videos on what I mean. While cranking, it does not want to catch, but only when I release the key, it will go.

No pedal action, to get more air in.

This only happened after changing these settings, however the car has gone through a major turbo swap, harness clean up etc etc, so anything is possible and could be coincidental. The sync loss only happened after my harness clean up, however I had the same sync loss issue a long time ago (typical nippon denso 24+1 2k-3k rev issues). Maybe reducing all the wires in my harness brought more noise back, dont know.

The car runs/drives great otherwise. :yeah!:

Please also post a data log and a tooth log of the hard starting. This will give us data not readily available in the video.

Sorry, I meant to ask for a composite log as that will also show the cam sensor. My mistake.

Looks like the falling edges line up to the point it can "jump edges" on cranking. You may be able to adjust the threshold setting pot on the main board to the point that the edge moves enough to get it to start.

Ill adjust the pots and see what happens. If that doesnt solve it, is my next step to switch to a crank wheel?

I took what my pots were set to and adjusted them 1 turn a time CCW until I got 6 turns each and nothing (didnt know my starting point). I then took them and adjusted them CW until anything happened. Currently I have both pots set to 6 turns CW and the car starts good now.

The R52 is what made the difference @ full CW. Thoughts on this?

A missing tooth type crank wheel won't have this issue; if you can get one on the motor without too much hassle, it can fix the issue for good.
