Hi, I know the answer is "as close to ambient as possible", but wonder the value when intake temp is too hot.
Currently Lotus 23C replica Audi 1.8T MS 2 v3 Sequential COP and ignition.

Too hot once it starts promoting detonation. That will vary from one engine and set up to another.

Are you utilizing a properly configured charge air cooler?
What temperatures are you developing?
And lets not fail to recognize the benifits of water/ meth injection to eradicate elevated cylinder temps.

Yes, I'm running an air to air intercooler. The engine is mid mounted under a replica 1960s open top fibreglass body and so there are air flow issues and listening to the engine is also difficult due to massive wind noise.
I'm seeing upto 53C on a 30C day. I think most of my issues are I don't have a decent supply of cold air into the air filter, I am working on that problem currently.

That does seem a tad lacklustre on the performance of the air to air.
Cool intake air for ingestion is helpful but more likely it's the cool air flow over the charge cooler core for a good reduction.
Some bikes (check out RB Racing for examples) have the bloody A to A core buried within and having obtuse plumbing tanks and flow redirection but allow enough external air movement to keep the inlet temps in check under high boost.

I get concerned at around 150 deg F. On the jetskis, with the huge intercoolers that we run, we get 10 degrees F over lake water temp at 200 KPA. That is about as good as this sort of thing gets.

53C is not high for IAT temps. Heat soak is a problem with A2A especially with mid engine configuration. Consider going with a A2W IC if this is a problem or add the WI as mentioned above for added benefits.

I've seen 225F.. 15# no intercooler..
