Alternator control trouble DENSO : 421000-0051

Post by Slider »

Finally completed the MS3X install on my 69 charger. Original alternator has been upgraded to a unit out of a 2002 Dodge Durango. Chrysler part #56029915AA, Denso part #421000-0051. This is a 2 wire field control style alternator. As per the MS3X install instructions I have connected one of the 2 wires from the alternator to switched +12v. The second wire is connected to the Megasquirt on Inj1. There is a 1N4007 rectifier diode connected between the +12v and the control wire to the Megasquirt. It is installed in the correct orientation. The alt is still overcharging at higher rpms. Voltage goes up to over 16v at 3000+

rpm. Can't seem to get the Megasquirt to take control of the voltage. MSQ attached. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not seeing anything obviously wrong with your settings.
Please take and post a datalog.

Data log attached. I took this with the engine warmed up and the battery in pretty good condition. Not really needing a charge. If I let the battery run down then connect the MS to the alternator it will charge at approx 13.5-14v at idle. Rev it up and it goes to about 15v. after the battery has good charge (12.2v or better without the engine running) It overcharges like in the log.I hope this makes sense and someone can help me figure this out. Cars not much fun if it won't charge the battery. Can't really go very far...LOL

I'm wondering if the wrong output is selected perhaps, the log behaviour is as if the output is permanently grounded.

As a test, disconnect the field control wires from the alternator and use a test bulb (sidelight bulb?) in place. See what the bulb is doing.

So I hooked up the test light to +12v and INJ1 of the MS3X. Fired up the car and the light was on. Fired up the alt and got the voltage up to 16.5 before I shut it off. Light stayed lit the whole time, no change. Looks like you're right that the MS3X is sending full ground no matter what the voltage is. Is there any way I can test individual components for the INJ1 circuit?

I am going to m change the output over to INJ2 and see if that makes any difference.

What outputs other than the INJ1 and INJ2 would be suitable to control a 2002 Durango 160amp alternator?

Switch the output over to inj2 and there is now no charge happening. INJ2 is sending no ground whatsoever. Starting to get a little frustrating. Not sure what to try next......

Did some more testing and now have INJ2 controlling the alternator. With no changes to alt control it took 3 reboots of the ECU to get it to do the controlling. I was working on getting the AFR to report when I saw the voltage start to rise then lock on at 13.5v. Wish I knew why it suddenly started working but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth either...LOL Thanks for you help!

I have no experience with alt.control yet, but I'm wondering why you would be using an injector output for this?

I am using the inj2 output as it is a high amp output suitable to control this alternator. Alt control has been working very well. Dished a couple of lifters and destroyed the cam but everything else is great! LOL Good excuse to get the roller lifters and a set of Trickflow heads...... mmmmm goood
