Difference between strong spark vs weak spark ?
Hi. This might be a newbie question
What's the difference between a strong spark vs a weak spark ?
If the spark is able to ignite the mixture of e85/air or gasoline/air does it then matter if you have a strong or weak spark ?
I'm currently in the middle of the project of wiring in a ms3pro ultimate on a supra 2jz-gte engine. And I know that I will be able to ignite the mixture with the standard coils and hKS twin spark module. But I would really like to buy the ign-1a coils for two reasons. 1 is that they have build in igniters and 2. then I will never have to upgrade no matter what.
Best regards
Kent

Re: Difference between strong spark vs weak spark ?
The spark has to be strong enough to light off the cylinder under all the conditions to which you'll be subjecting the motor. I've had a number of clients that needed to drop the gap on the spark plugs around 10 psi boost to prevent spark blowout, upgrading the coils would have worked as well.

Yeah i know that. was just wondering if you would benefit with a stronger spark if you are able to light the mixture with a weak spark.
Kinda like using a matchstick or a propanburner to light a fire. there is no really difference as long as the matchstick is able to light it.
The mixture wont burn better with a stronger coil with longer spark duration and more voltage?

I have seen changes in spark plug gap (and thus spark kernel) change power #s on a dyno by as much as 5% so yes sometimes even though the spark is lighting off the mixture you can benefit from a stronger spark.

That’s what I wanted to hear if someone actually tested it
Gonna change the supra coils to ign-1a then

Re: Difference between strong spark vs weak spark ?
I don't think there is such a thing as "strong spark" and a "weak spark".
My 2.2L turbo dodge engine doesn't like running 20psi above 5000rpm with .028 gap, but it will run good with .025 gap to my 7000rpm redline. Same 420A coil, same cheap $20 plug wires, same plugs, different gap.

for a 2jz, you might want to consider the D585 (GM LQ9) coils. They fit well between the valve cover on the 2jz and they have a good reputation for providing a excellent spark.

Spark duration is usually just as important as well.
Spark 'force' or amperage mostly comes into play with high compression engines.

i have just read some horror posts about the LQ9 coilsSuprazz wrote:for a 2jz, you might want to consider the D585 (GM LQ9) coils. They fit well between the valve cover on the 2jz and they have a good reputation for providing a excellent spark.
Thats why i was more into the ign-1a coils, and i have only read positive things about them. (they should be more powerfull too right?)
the negative this is that the coils are sitting on top on the coil cover.

If you don't want to mount the coils on the valve cover, get longer wires and mount them to the firewall or an inner fender... but the stock location for the gm coils is on the valve cover so heat and vibration shouldn't be a problem as they have already tested the design. Strong spark is important or all the big engine builders wouldn't waste money buying the better parts, even if its just that they will keep the plugs clean when running under hard conditions. Good Luck.
