MSDroid beta testing through Google Play - testers please?

We've been very busy with MSDroid and it has been a long time since a last release was done. We're still extremely enthusiastic about MSDroid and want to reflect this in more frequent updates. Due to the amount of work done however, a fair degree of testing is now needed before 1.0 goes live on Play. If anyone would like to install this beta release and any subsequent betas and submit problem reports (either by submitting automatic crash reports, emailing us, or reporting issues on here) it would be really greatly appreciated. We'd like any feedback, good or bad, with as much detail as possible where relevant (type of Android device, MegaSquirt exact firmware version, and so forth).

What I've now generated tonight is beta release 1.0b0. This release of MSDroid to be honest looks very similar on the surface to what's currently on Play, but has had a lot of changes done underneath. There is a concurrent developmental version that advances things much more in terms of visually and in features, but we need a little more time with that.

For people to easily test it, what we're doing now is using the alpha / beta test facility that's part of Google Play. What this means is that anyone who applies (by using the links below) can subscribe to automatic beta updates through Google Play as well as the standard releases. This means that there's no longer the hassle of manually installing test APKs, and we'll also get the automatic crash reports that you submit.

I know it's a bit of a pain, but to opt-in to the Google Play alpha / beta test programme it seems you need to join a Google Group associated with the app on Play, so I created an MSDroid group:

...which you need to join.

Then hopefully this link should work for you once you've joined (and ensuring browser is logged into Google)

(If you try that link without being a member of the group or if you're not logged into Google, it gives you a 404 error.)

Once this is done, you will get automatic beta updates. Then what you should get is version 1.0b0.

I'll be making an effort to update the beta version almost nightly as long as we get problem reports to fix until it's stable enough for full release.

Doh! That didn't work out too well for me. Followed the procedure above, updated the app on my Nexus 7, now it crashes immediately upon launching. I submitted a crash report - don't know if that helps. ECU is a MS3 running the pre-1.3 alpha 5 firmware. MSDroid was previously working for me (mostly) after I manually put the alpha 5 .ini file in the appropriate folder.

From your stacktrace, I have a feeling Trev forgot to do a "Build -> Clean" or something before building the APK, looks like it's missing the Dropbox library somehow. Oopsi!

Applied to join beta grp, I have been running the current Play version on Android-x86 4.2.2 on a couple thinkpads, MS3-pre1.3a5 FW currently.

Yep, I would assume we won't accept any more people until this is fixed, there is no point. That should be fixed tomorrow Then you guys will have all weekend to give us your feedback

I may have edited after you saw my post. Is a dropbox account a prerequisite ? Never used it before but if I need to set one up I will.

Nope, its optional. If you create one, it will allow you to get datalogs, ini, msq, etc on your desktop computer (or laptop or whatever) directly from your tablet/phone without having to manually email anything. Everything happen behind the scene and you have access to your files anywhere that you have dropbox installed, pretty cool!

Think of Dropbox as a special kind of flashdrive in ‘the cloud’, accessible anywhere you have an Internet connection. Your MSDroid files get added to that "flashdrive".

I know that personally, after a tuning session, I always send myself by email the msq and datalog. Now, they are just there on my desktop computer waiting for me. No possibility of forgetting to send them before shutting down my tablet. It keeps thing more organized as well.

It might be worth mentioning as well that we're now generating regular MSL datalog file instead of our MDL format... The log viewer still use MDL format behind the scene for performance reason but only MSL datalog will get synched to Dropbox as only those are useful outside of MSDroid. No more confusion

Hey just a little feedback... I loaded 1.0b1 this morning and the crash upon launch appears to be fixed. Unfortunately I drove a different car to work so can't test connecting to the Megasquirt - I'll do that later today.

When I try to open one of the logs I took before, the program crashes, but that's probably because the logs themselves are corrupt?
