4t65e questions.

Post by 88lt3 »

hello to all, I'm a new user looking for a controller for my 4t65e and have a few questions.
1, will mircosquirt work and under what settings? the 4t40 switch input logic is different than the 4t65.
2, I see there is an "auto" mode, which I assume is the d4 position, automatically shifted as you accelerate, will this work when manual shifting (moving manual valve position) or will the "manual-selectable" mode need to be selected to do this? I essentially want this to operate as it would with a oem pcm, with full control of shift points, pressure, lock up and so on.
3, is there a way to create a launch mode, a way to "tie up" the trans to build boost (probably not advisable) or should I just rely on the old fashion pwr. brake?
thanks for any input in advance. I feel confident that this is the controller I will use, just want to know these things first.

1. The 4T65E isn't currently supported but it shouldn't be that hard to add as it will be similar to the other GM transmissions. Of course we will have to ask James very nicely if he could add it and the switch logic will be needed (probably some other info as well).

2. The firmware does an outstanding job of duplicating OEM operation as well as allowing programmable shift points etc...

3. You'd still need a transbrake to do this

How different is the 4T65 from the 4L60E ? (Aside from being FWD vs. RWD)

James, if you could help, that would be great. I'm pretty familiar with the trans and its electronics from the dealer tech side of things. I didn't see any supported controllers with similar switch logic. Let me know if you need any of the gm docs on this, I should be able to come up with them.
Thanks,
Joel

The output logic is above, how about the gear range detection inputs ?

What other solenoids does this gearbox use?

A 4T65E has 3 shift solenoids ( 1-2 , 2-3 and 3-4) a PWM Pressure solenoid and a PWM TCC solenoid. It uses a pressure switch assembly similar to other GM transmissions for valve position and has both an input speed sensor and VSS

Do you have the input pattern truth table?

Where is the ISS reading? The 4L80E is after the OD gearset.

What are the gear ratios?

Gear ratios are as follows: 1st 2.92, 2nd 1.56, 3rd 1.0, OD .70, Reverse 2.38

ISS is on the input shaft.

Truth table A B C
P/N Hi Lo Hi
Rev Lo Lo Hi
OD Hi Lo Lo
3 Hi Hi Lo
2 Hi Hi Hi
1 Lo Hi Hi

Also a correction to the solenoids There are only 2 shift solenoids a 1-2/3-4 solenoid and a 2-3 solenoid

Shift solenoid pattern is as follows

1-2 2-3
P ON ON
R ON ON
N ON ON
1 ON ON
2 OFF ON
3 OFF OFF
4 ON OFF

I'm pretty sure most Ecotecs came with a 4T40E/4T45E trans which is already supported.

its the same logic as the 4l60 with different gear ratios, so it should be usable as is

Except that there is no 3-2 downshift solenoid....

It's the same solenoid output, but switch input logic isn't even close, 4l60 uses a pressure switch for position input, 4t65 uses a manual valve position switch

a little more looking and in 2003 gm did away with the pressure switch prior to that they had them. all years had the input lever switch

I will declare my ignorance and ask - so what? I have to assume that the TCU neither knows nor cares if the switch signal it's receiving is from a cam / lever closing a contact, or hydraulic pressure pushing on a spring. What makes one different from the other, as far as James' code and the uS processor are concerned?

Pressure SENSOR vs mechanical switch - big difference. Pressure SWITCH vs mechanical switch ... What am I missing?

Different switches are closed 4l60 vs 4t65 in any given manual valve position, therefor not being able to "just use the 4l60" settings. It's not a pressure vs rotary switch problem.

So it looks like we are going to need 2 variants with the 4T65E, Pre-2004 and 2004 and newer. The pre-2004 models use the pressure switches ( they also have a mechanical range switch but it uses a different truth table than 04-up) and the 2004 and newer uses the internal mechanical range switch.
