Has anyone else had this trouble - the main megasquirt.info site seems to be down more often than it's up when I try to access it been going on (and off) for weeks.

This is usualy the case... The DNS server names are updated every so often and every now and then one goes wrong. If the ISP isn't proactive (or present) for that update, sometimes you can loose service to certain segments of the IP map until the update is made right.
