Alternator wiring

Post by Ms36262cobaltLS »

I have a. GM 2 wire alternator looking on ideas how to wire it I don't need the megasquirt to control it I just was thinking about running an indicator light setup but is that sufficient for road driving occasionally and drag strip racing? Any info helps

On most 2 wire alternators, it won't charge without the warning light connected correctly. Use the correct bulb, and connect one side to ignition switch controlled +12V The other side goes to the small alternator terminal.

Note it must be a bulb or an LED with a high power (5w) resistor inline. The alternator needs an amount of current flowing through it to generate the excitation field. The alternator will sink current from 12V through the bulb in to the alternator when it is not turning and then when it is turning the field will be energised to 12V, so 12V on both sides of the bulb makes it go out.
