12v Circuit Design Software

Post by DonMaximo »

I can sit here with pencils, eraser and create a schematic for my 12V circuits that would include battery, switches, relays, resistors, wiring, sensors, ECU, etc. Sure would be nice to indicate wire gauge as well. I could then share this diagram with others to get a 2nd pair of eyes on what I intend to do.

Is there a relatively inexpensive or free software solution to doing this ?

My thought is that the software provides a simpler means for correction and alterations later on, not to mention my memory is not what it once was. Should would be nice to keep it with the car.

Thoughts - Suggestions ???

I use what's called generically CAD software. One free one for a PC is DraftSight. They use a common file format which is cross platform. Includes a library, so you can use symbols others have created or make your own. Being vector based, it can be enlarged to any size with no loss of quality. It can also be used to create all sorts of technical drawings, which can drive a CAD cutting machine directly. Here's a couple of examples:-

Check out Eagle from Cadsoft. They have a free version as well as a scalable upgrade path. Eagle is a full featured capture/layout and DRM package that approaches the functionality of the high end packages.

Use the largest frame available in the free version to get the most single sheet workspace.
