5cyl ignition triggering

Post by Haudi »

Hey there! A year and some months ago I successfully ran MSnS-E on the LT1 powered 944 race car I built (I suppose that nearly 400whp counts as successfuly 8) ). Now I'm thinking of changing over my '87 Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro which has been running for 3 years on a v2.2 board and 2 years on DT1.02 code. I think there may be some hangups though.

First off is ignition triggering. The stock ECU which is still running the ignition (very well I might add) uses 3 main sensors to determine timing. There are 2 VR sensors at the flywheel, one is triggered by a pin at TDC, the other counts flywheel teeth to determine RPM, then also a hall sensor with a single window in the dizzy. The system uses the hall sensor only during cranking to figure out which hit of the TDC VR sensor is combustion stroke, then once this is determined the hall sensor is no longer used and the ignition events are calculated based on the RPM sensor and TDC.

From my understanding of current MSnS-E software I can not use any of the above to trigger off of, correct? Could a firmware change fix this?

The non-turbo cars used a vacuum advance hall sensor dizzy with 5 windows to run the ignition, and I do have one of these dizzys laying arround, but I don't want to go that route due to innacuracy.

Second question is about knock sensing. Has anybody out there used a knock sensor from an 80's VW/Audi car? I imagine they all work the same or close at least.

Unfortunately the OEM triggering arrangement cannot be used as there are too many teeth on the flywheel. So either go with the 5 window dizzy or add a 5 tooth crank wheel and use the single window dizzy to give you coil on plug potential.

I was thinking about the possibilty of adding 4 more pins to the flywheel and using the existing VR sensor.

The way my front crank pulley is designed it would be very difficult to run a trigger wheel (a 4 inch deep dish with a single 27mm bolt torqued to 320lb/ft).

If were up to using any trigger method off of the crank I'd jsut as well stick with the stock ignition, it does seem to work just fine.

Check Supergizmo's post here http://www.msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t=19 ... c&start=16.
He's running his ABY engine with stock VR-sensor on flywheel and cam-trigger.
Also running COP on that engine.
We only connected a divide by 9 circuit between LM1815 circuit and MS.
Some small problems but it is working.
