Timing slightly off

Post by Jon k »

Hey guys, car is running with spark control and I managed to take my fan/shroud off to put motor at TDC and make some marks around it to check timing.

I made a mark with paint on the oil pan and a mark on the tooth that lines up with that oil pan mark when @ TDC so I have a viewable TDC mark. Then, I marked the next tooth clockwise of the TDC tooth in pink paint, to indicate 6 degrees off TDC because I have a 60-2 wheel. However, the pink mark is not lining up with the TDC mark on the oil pan when I have 6 degrees set at idle. When I set my advance on timing light gun to "5" the pink mark (one tooth clockwise of the TDC tooth, that'd be advanced right?) mark lines up with the TDC mark on the oil pan. So I guess I am about 5 degrees off?

What do I change to compensate? I have a trigger angle of 65 and -10 in the fixed angle. I don't want to change numbers in the wrong direction and have a problem. Thanks in advance guys

Try marking the next tooth (12 btdc) and then setting Fixed timing to 12.

Then with your strobe set to "just flash" strobe it and confirm the timing is right.

Will it be ok running the car idle @ 12 advance? its a 2 valve 10:1 compression I think it idles like 8 advance by default.

Use 6 btdc if you prefer then. Personally I wouldn't worry about setting it to 12 or 18. My engine would idle badly at only 6btdc and likes more advance.

James - if the motor is running smoothly then that means my triggers are fine right? So after I set it to fixed 6 or 12, if it lines up properly, what do I change after that? Is it the trigger angle I adjust or should I have my triggers setup a tooth differently? What do you suggest.

You MUST ensure that the engine is running at the commanded advance.

Start by adjusting your trigger angle, if it goes below 60 or above 70 I'd consider offseting your trigger teeth accordingly.

Thanks james - I have it the trigger angle at 67 and the fixed angle at 12 and the marks I made are lining up. I am going to take a pic of it to ensure that you think this is working right.

Here are the images. It looks like I got it lined up pretty good.

One thing James - I have the trigger angle at 67, fixed angle at 12 and everything seems just right (i get lower MAP 37 with 12 vs 44 with 6) but one thing I don't get is my timing light. When I set the advance to "0" it flashes on the 12 degree mark. When I set the advance to 5 or 10 or 15, or just upwards in general... it looks like its moving the mark more retarded and counter clockwise of the TDC mark... is that right?

With the timing light set at 0, what you see is what you get. So you are triggering at 12 degrees which is what you want. So your trigger angle is correct as it's verfied by the light.
