ignition coil dwell of 280ms during cranking

Post by chadr »

I had to replace my coil and wanted to make sure the dwell wasn't too high. I decided to record the coil current during cranking and saw the first coil dwell time lasted for 280 ms and the remaining cranking dwell was closer to what I expected at 8 ms. The running dwell is 4 ms. These measurements are at the coil.

I've been running this ignition setup since 2007 without much of any change except to the dwell times now and then.

Tunerstudio shows hr 11d as the firmware.

I've added those to the initial post. Thanks.

My msd blaster high vibration coil died and I replaced it with an msd blaster oil filled version. I mounted the coil vertically.

Could the 280ms dwell have contributed to the coil dying? I've been running the car since 2006 on megasquirt and have only had the engine quit running this one time due to a failed coil. I had replaced the stock 1990 coil because I wanted a coil with more energy to help with misfires. My guess is that the 280ms coil charge isn't good though it doesn't kill a coil quickly. This excessive coil charge when cranking may explain why the engine has kickbacked when starting on occasion for the last 8 years :)

Just to test, I changed cranking timing from timing based to trigger return and saw the same initial 260 - 280ms dwell

I assume development on msns code for ms1 is done so there is no chance developers are looking into this now, is that right?

Thanks.

Yes, all done a number of years ago.
