engine wont rev past 2800 rpm

The car is a vw golf. It has a 2.0 16v. I am using the vr sensor on the motor. It is wasted spark. I notice when I bring the engine up to about 2800 I start getting a huge spike in the rpm data. No doubt this is tripping the rev limiter. I read a while back that you can put a resistor in line with the vr to stop this but I for got the value. Any know what it is

Try starting with a 10K resistor.
