VB921 install

Post by Mick L »

Could someone please take a look at the pic of my board and tell me if the way I have installed the two VB921 coil drivers will work or if am I heading for trouble.

I have not used the space at Q16 that is occupied by a tip 120 so I mounted another heatsink under the board and mounted the VB’s there.

All connections are done with 0.6 mm conductor wire

Vb1

Red conductor:

Top of r26? to - 330ohm resistor to - pin 1 of the vb921.

Green conductor:

Pin 2 of the vb021 to - pin 6 of the db 37

Black Conductor:

Pin3 of the vb921 to – r43

Vb2

Red conductor:

Top of r29 to - 330ohm resistor to - pin 1 of the vb921.

Green conductor:

Pin 2 of the vb921 to - pin 6 of the db 37

Black Conductor:

Pin3 of the vb921 to – r43

Any thoughts would be appreciated thanks

Nothing really jumps out at me other than that I haven't seen a new VB921 install for quite a while.

Ah yes, they have been gathering dust since 2006 as other things keep stealing my time. Coming back to the forum It was amazing to see how much things have moved on. Thanks for looking over the board I'm a little out of my depth with some of this stuff :)

Personally, I'd install the coil drivers as close to the coils as possible. But would use active buffers as drivers inside MS - to avoid the possibility of damage due to a wiring fault, etc.

Cheers Dave,

I got the first sentence but the second one has just gone winging over my head at 10,000 feet, lol.

Sorry but I really am out of my depth with this stuff but I am keen to learn. Your reply is throwing up more questions.

I don't know anything about active buffers but locaing the coil drivers near to the coils - is that idea something like having a bosch ignition module . If it is then why do people want to have their vb's or bips inside the ms case?

A buffer is using something like one of the LED drivers to then drive your high current device. Rather than direct from the processor. The hope being if a disaster happens the buffer will prevent the processor being damaged.
