MS not respecting stock 4AGE distributor timing

Post by vrtigo »

I have a 4AGE which runs mint on the stock ECU at stock distributor timing. When I plug in the MS, I have to retard the timing by turning the distributor, and use settings:

Spark advance angle: 10-15
Trim angle: 10

What I gather that trim angle does is "pulls back" the timing to certain degrees advanced. So basically its undoing the retarding that Im doing by setting distributor position, and allowing to start and run.

Question is, why wont it run at stock position with 0 trim angle? I get constant kickbacks on cranking.

Ive read the fucking manual front to back, to which page were you referring to?

So anyway, now Ive got the car running at 15 degrees advance angle with 0 degrees trim angle.
Cranking advance is -10 degrees.

Even so, when cold, constant kickbacks until I turn the distributor itself retarded.
When warm, this is still sometimes required, but less of a problem, and can sometimes start without it.

Once it starts, I turn the distributor back to factory location and the car runs beautifully.
