VR conditioner options.

Post by BigBlockRanger »

Hoping to use my v2.2 MS-extra to provide ignition for my Mustang. It is a 552" big block Ford.

The plan is wasted spark using a 36-1 wheel, Ford VR sensor, EFI Source Coil Ignitor and Pantera coils.

Now it is my understanding that the v2.2 board needs the VR signal conditioned to be usable. It has been suggested that this could be accomplished using a HEI module, either a 4 pin or a 7 pin, which I have available. However, there are some reservations as to whether or not an HEI can keep up with the frequency of a 36-1 wheel spinning at 7000 rpm. (252,000 pulses per min = 4.2khz).

So if the HEI is not suitable, what are the VR conditioner options that remain out there. I have seen a few, but since the v2.2 stuff is so old, it's hard to know which one's are outdated, which one's have issues, or whatnot.

Or would it be better to just swap to a wheel with less teeth to lower the frequency?

Open to suggestions!

A Zeal daughterboard could work well here - it uses an LM1815 conditioner, plus it is easy to install inside the case.

You may want to use the Pantera coils with built in ignitors; they can handle a bit more current than BIP373s.

Yeah, but I'm on a budget! :)

This is basically CDMBill's old ignition setup that he ran for many years on his BBF in the 71 Mustang.

Cheapest way surely is EDIS? A V2.2 board opto input will work with that.

I have certainly considered EDIS and like that it offers a 'limp home' mode, but I am particularly interested in using the launch control function available in Extra.

From what I've read, it is not functional when using an EDIS module.

Thanks for the input everyone. A friend pointed out that a Cherry GS100502 will work (hall sensor) and does not need a conditioner. So that is the route I will likely be taking.
