BOSCH 1.237.031.296 Hall sensor

Post by grayfoxx »

During my initial testing with MS1 I got readings from coolant, air, tps, map, etc but could not get RPM. I double checked wiring , etc and also tried a pullup with 1k resistor. It is a distributor integrated type hall sensor with magnet so the wheel passes between the magnet and metal. I bench tested with an LED also and got no light without pullup and no pulsing with the pullup.

I just ordered a new Hall sensor that looks to be a match but my concern is that maybe 12v is too much? I can't find any definitive literature on the sensor to tell me if I should be running it at 5v or 12v but I have seen some information that some sensors are one or the other.

Anyone have experience with these that can tell me for sure if 12v is safe?

This is the setup I started with about a decade ago, you're right, different places will tell you 5v and some will tell you it's 12v. Personally I've used both voltages on the same dizzy successfully. If i remember correctly the sensor is wired with a 12v feed, a ground and then the signal line to ECU. That signal wire being fed from a 5v source.

Thanks! Just got my new one and trying LED tests again with a 9v. Do you recall having to use an external pull up for this sensor?

No pullup is required, or at least not on the 'external' side of the opto isolator.
There's obviously a pullup on CPU side of the opto isolator, but that's just the normal megasquirt circuit.

Which schematic are you using for opto circuit?

That sensor was used in a lot of Australian cars. Certain model commodores and falcons. Yes they were 12v supplied in those applications. I have used one before but can not remember if they are open collector or inbuilt pull up. Easy to test with a multimeter.
