Tuner Studio loses communication

MS1-EXTRA, fuel only, 334 cid SBC, Hillborn stack injection converted to EFI, 8-26lb hi-impedance Bosch Injectors, Mallory Sprint Mag.

Tuner Studio upgraded, on HP EliteBook 8730w, running Windows 7 professional 64 bit. DIY-Autotune USB to Serial adapter.

I can find and connect to the MS using the Detect button under Settings. When I try to drive the car and use Tune Analyze Live it loses comm and I get an Off Line error. Sometimes it will re-sync, but usually I have to go through the Settings Detect routine, sometimes several times, to get it to re-connect. I have taken the MS1 apart and examined it with a large magnifying glass, and cannot see any breaks in the connections at the serial port. I have tried a cheaper USB/Serial adapter, same results.

Does anyone have any idea what I should be looking at next?

is your USB to serial adapter bolted to MS port with USB cable running to comp ? if yes, you should stick your USB/serial adapter directly to comp USB port (or use as short as possible usb cable) and use a RS232 cable between adapter and MS.

Thanks! I was using the USB cable supplied with the adapter. Will change it and report back!

Many thanks 2swe, removed the USB cable, plugged the adapter into the laptop, ran my old serial cable to the MS and so far, (knock wood) no Off Line errors!
