No Start, 36-1 VR, wasted spark 4 cylinder - SOLVED

Post by 1868ccMGB »

Good evening guys,

I am headed out of town for the weekend, but wanted to take a minute to pick the brains of those more knowledgeable than I.

Background
Car was setup with EDIS 4(module, coil, trigger wheel) and has been running great since 2006.

Current
I decided it would be a good idea to remove the EDIS module and fire the coil directly from MS.
Removed EDIS 4 wiring.
Built VR circuit on board (I omitted 12 years ago...)
Wired in my two BIP373 and ran the ground and coil wires through a new DB9 plug that I installed.

SO:
I have 250 rpm in TS when cranking.
Engine occasionally bumps but does not start.
Half the 4 tower coil becomes very hot, half cool.
I didn't screen shot it, but the Tooth logger looks like a roller coaster with the tooth heights. No image appears on the trigger logger.
Attempted to adjust VR pots, but couldn't smooth the tooth logger.

What should a good tooth logger profile look like? Should I also have results on the trigger logger page?
Do I have a MSQ setting wrong that is causing my coil to get hot - only on half?

Thanks for the help!

Are you using a dumb coil ?

Hot coil part, check ignition settings according the manual like going high/low, dwell.

Cold coil part, bip isn't working ?
Or coil is already damaged by wrong settings.

Thank you Lav - I am going to solder some wires onto a turn signal bulb this afternoon, I have not tried that yet. I will post back my results.

The rain may stop this afternoon, hopefully I will have some results to share.

I put my test light in the car tonight, both channels for wasted spark will flash a turn signal bulb.

I checked the coil and had 1.8 ohms across the primary coils, which is high. The towers measure correctly on one coil, and open on the other set of towers. New coil was ordered tonight.

This is an older coil but
Dwell was set at 3ms, discharge time started out at 1ms, but I backed it down to .1 based on something I read on a settings page.

That 1.8 Ohm on primary isn't high.
I am running dumb coils on a motorcycle and they are 3.0 Ohm primary.
And I would keep the discharge time at 1.0 msec.

New coil came in Friday, checked .5 ohms across the primary.

Found I had the VR sensor wires reversed.

Hit the key and it fired up.

Spent Sunday cleaning up the wiring.

Thanks for the help!
