Good work guys. Well I see this also has to go through the riggers of live testing.
as there is no magic pill for creating a new product.
My product is still available for testing and evaluation. Would love a side by side comparison as both
products use the same techniques (TPIC8101). I am however using a dedicate 40 mhz 100ns instruction cycle processor whose only job is to detect knock. The firmware it is written in assembly so it will be rediculously quick.
This can also serve as a generic knock detection system and does not have to be tied solely to the ms.
Both product have their niche when it comes to knock detection.

I'm fairly new to MS and just bought a diypnp unit.
Having functionality similar to ms3 would be nice, but seeing as how this is 100% untested in the real world, a $200 price tag is a bit hard to swallow. For all we know it may not work correctly under real world conditions.

That schematic is my own modified version of the OP's original one.
If you go back many, many pages, you'll find my explanations.
You'll also come across the nonsense I endured from one particular individual which ultimately put me off contributing to this thread.
IMHO ignore this complete car crash of a thread and buy a proven knock unit.

I have some boards that have been tested on for 6 months now. I have made 3 beta boards and 3 final boards. Uses TPIC8101 and ATmega 328. 2 on a MS2 and 2 standalone(by themselves).

Is variable sensitivity even needed ? I've tested knock at lower to mid rpms and its always louder than the engine background noise . Maybe at a higher rpm raise the frequency being listened for?

Hey guys. I am an electrical and computer engineering student. I've been working on a solution for this for about six months now.
The primary advantage of the TPIC8101 is the ability to window your listening period to limit false positives due to valve train and other engine noise. I'm not sure on the algorithm that MS3 knock setup uses, but I have successfully created my own code to do this. Since the time between valves opening and closing varies with rpm, you need to adjust the time constant accordingly. My current code does this as well as digitally adjustable gain, and bandpass filter.
Unfortunately the current code is very limited due to the way I am calculating crank position and is only currently applicable to a 12 tooth crank sensor and a 1 tooth cam sensor. Also, the code is written for a propeller microcontroller in a somewhat C language using the simpleIDE compiler.
I am successfully interfacing it with my MS2 on a Toyota 4AGE 20v. The propeller is simply sending the MS2 a pulse to indicate knock. This allows use with the current tunerstudio and msextra firmware.
I am cleaning up some equations to make applying my code to other applications relatively easy. Once I feel the code is easy for another programmer to follow, I will be releasing it under an open source GNU General Public License.
I am also working on a board that will provide dual inputs, hardware adjustable gain, oscillator circuit, and everything else needed to get the TPIC8101 functional and able to be interfaced with a microcontroller. This will also be released under an open source GNU General Public License.
I am shooting to have this finished by the end of summer. Please keep in mind I am working on this in between classes during my free time.

I thought there was a database error from what Matt Cramer said a while back... There was a lot of work I did and posted based on the original analog circuit back in 2009 that all got deleted also. I think everyone's contribution to this thread is inspiring and informative, being an electronics tinkerer myself.
