convert non 36-1 stock VR signal

Post by Mwood95 »

Hey all,
first post on here.

I am about to purchase a MS2 box from DIYautotune.

I have a subaru eg33 (6 cylinder boxer) engine in my project car. Stock, the eg33 has two crank trigger wheels, one 12 tooth no missing and another with a very unorthodox 6 tooth pattern.
diagram of both wheels.

my question: I am running EDIS on my engine, at least for now. I would rather not run a 36-1 wheel with a fabricated Vr bracket if I can use the stock wheels and convert the signal to 36-1 for the EDIS.
I wouldn't consider this an option but I remember someone telling me that megasquirt had a function that would convert the signal from a stock trigger wheel setup to 36-1 for EDIS.

Is there a way to do this, so I can retain my engine's stock trigger wheel setup and convert the signal for my EDIS system?

another random question if anyone has time: how reliable are mechanical idle (no idle valve) setups for periods of long driving? assuming gas mileage is not a concern.

Thanks alot
Mitch

I'm a little confused - you say you're using EDIS, but you don't want to use a 36-1 wheel, because you're using a 12-0 / 1+2+3 wheel arrangement. Unless I've missed something, EDIS -only- uses a 36-1 wheel.

You can use the 12-0 wheel with an MS2 box if you cut away all but one of the cam wheel teeth. Cutting away one crank tooth -can- make positioning the cam tooth easier.

EDIS must use a 36-1 wheel and it must be phased to the sensor correctly.

sorry, I was unclear.

I was wondering if there existed a piece of hardware/software that would read the signal from my stock crank triggers and convert the signal to 36-1 for the EDIS to read.
I thought I had read something about it before, but it sounds like I misread whatever that was.

thanks for the help

Now, I am confused also....... If you already have a 36-1 wheel mounted, why not retain it and save yourself the headache?

I have been using MS for ~9 years and have never heard such a claim. I seriously doubt that there is any way to accomplish what you are proposing.

It would be much, much easier to have MS2 decode your existing 12 tooth crank and 1 tooth cam wheel and operate the coils directly. What you are asking to do to run the EDIS falls into the "If you have to ask how you should do it, you should not do it" category.
