DIY Auto Tune's "Red Avenger" vs "Black Stinger" EGT sensors

I'm looking to measure EGT and I'm looking for some help deciding whether I should get the Red Avenger (closed tip) EGT sensor, or the Black Stinger (open tip) EGT sensor. Does anyone here know the different in response rate between the two? Does the open-tip one fail a lot sooner than the closed tip?

I'll be using the sensors on an aircooled VW engine, so I'm not sure if that means much of anything. It's not a performance vehicle and my goal is to do some lean-of-peak tuning with my biggest focus on keeping head-temps down. I guess the big factor is the response rates between the two because I would like to be able to catch EGT temps quickly enough so I don't kill my heads.

Besides the measurement timings, does anyone have the physical measurements for the sensors? It would be nice to know the measurement of the bent tip, and the measurement from the bend to the flexible attachment.

I don't have any hard numbers, but our suppliers state that the Stinger open tips can see a single miss at 8,000 RPM. The closed tip ones aren't quite that fast but still are pretty quick - certainly faster than the cylinder heads change temperature. They'll give you years of service - theoretically the closed tip ones should last longer, but they're all pretty durable.

It's about 2" from the tip to the bend, about 3 1/2" bend to flex section.

Hello, I'm planning to use egt per cylinder, can any of those two be connected directly to a MS (4 ADC channels)???.

All EGT sensors require an interface board to change their very low voltage output into a 0-5V signal. You an either use a standalone K-type to 5V convertor or the multi-channel addon box from DIYAutotune.

All k-type thermocouple probes require an amplifier circuit and most of them don't have a built-in one as is the case here. So you would need to add that circuit to use the EGT probes with the MS ADC inputs. You can also use a CAN based solution: http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/cane ... p-542.html
