LS style pencil coils

Post by prof315 »

I got a look yesterday at a new GMC Terrain 3.0L and it uses pencil coils (DOHC motor) that are electrically identical to an LS coil! Even better it will fit a VW 20V head (and a bunch of others I'm sure) as a direct bolt in.

well yeah but I mean when they are bolted to their mounting brackets, regular LSx coils are mounted in banks of 4 but they're still seperate coils

something like this?

I only had my hands on one for about 20 minutes ( I was doing an oil change on a customer's Terrain) But I took one out and it is the same size as a VAG pencil COP coil. The bolt hole even lines up on a 20V head!

just ordered one, will see if the standard ls1 connectors fit, and if these fit into my bmw's engine, supra's engine, and sentra's engine as far as length go.

hopefully these include the overdwell protection that's in the actual ls1 coils

The standard Delphi/Packard metripac connector doesn't fit. They use the new GT style connector. These guys should have them though: http://www.lsxtune.com/shop/index.php/cPath/109_130

And BTW newer (07 and up for sure) Ecotec 4 cylinders are using a shorter version of the same coil.

Newer Northstars are also using pencil coils now. Looks like the are somewhere in between the length of the V6 coil (longest) and Ecotec coil (shortest).

Sorry for the noob question, but...

So will MS drive these coils directly? No need for an ignitor box?

Yep, you'll just need to set up a 5 volt logic level spark output for them.

I believe the 07-08 suzuki XL7 with the 3.6l uses the same coil as that terrain . I used to work for suzuki so I am pretty familiar with that coil.Too bad I didnt scrounge any of them . I do have 4 2009 ecotec coils though but they are a little short for my nissan though...bummer.
