BMW Crankshaft sensor

Post by smalcol »

Hello,
I'm working on setting up a BMW V8 engine for megasquirt and I'm confused about the crank sensor type. It has two wires, but the BMW wiring info states that it is a hall effect type sensor. Has anyone seen a two wire hall effect sensor?

Thanks in advance

I have heard of 2-wire Hall sensors for industrial controls, it is certainly a possibility that yours is similar.

Thank you, the engine code is M62B44, it's from a 1998 BMW 540i.

This is where it's identified as a hall effect sensor. It shows the two connections and a shielded cable, but it's vague on the connection of the shield.

A VR sensor will give the same resistance reading regardless of which way round the DVM is connected, as it's a simple coil. A hall effect may give a resistance reading but will change with polarity as it's an active device.

im kinda a BMW guy
so let me fix it that all BMW M62 engine using VR sensor not Hall
sometimes even the VR sensor have 3 Pins.. it stills VR not Hall
because Hall is 3 pins.... VR usually 2 Pins
Pins Equal to Cable

That seems to be correct, I measure the same resistance in both directions. The BMW documentation does refer to it as a Hall sensor, that's incorrect apparently.

Some BMW did use a hall effect CPS. And they can fail. My M52 is on its third.

Another way to check a VR is to connect a DVM set to DC volts across it, and move a piece of steel across it - to mimic a toothed wheel. You should see a voltage. Which will change polarity if you move the steel in the opposite direction.
