Australian 302 Ford Trigger/Balancer on an American 302?

Post by rick_brade »

I've been trying to find an elegant yet inexpensive junkyard solution to add a 36-1 trigger wheel to my 1990 Mustang 302.
I also happen to like the visual appeal of having the trigger wheel tucked behind the harmonic balancer instead of having a trigger wheel out in front for everyone to see.

As you may already know, our only American OEM harmonic balancer options with trigger wheels are limited to the 1996-2001 Ford Explorer.
Unfortunately for most of us, Explorer pulleys don't stick out as far, so you're stuck with offset pulleys or converting all accessories to the low profile style (96-01 Explorer & 94-95 Mustang) which forces you to use a reverse rotation style water pump and front timing cover. This won't work for me because I only want to run a 3 pulley belt drive.

This website http://www.kustombitz.com.au/p/1174076/ ... ement.html leads me to believe that the late model Australian Windsor engines use a different harmonic balancer than the American Ford Explorer. The linked website claims the following dimensions:
  • Diameter = 6.043 inch
    Overall depth = 4.468 inch
    crank bore = 1.374 inch
    nose OD = 1.877 inch
I'm assuming that the Australians are using a 50 Oz counterweight based on a visual inspection of the photo.
Obviously the low-profile crank pulley in the photo would need to be swapped out, but I'm not sure about the installed pulley length as compared to my 1990 Mustang pulley length.

Does this sound like an OEM part that us Ford guys can work with?

All I can confirm it is a 50oz balancer - length I no idea. I would like to find a 28oz version though have not been unable to.
