Dwell on TCi ignition

Post by mickeymarrows »

Simple question,

On an basic ignition system, like the Bosch system fitted to VW's in the 80's, with a hall sensor and 4 window wheel in the dizzy, what controls the dwell?

Is it simply the width of the window?

No in a smart dwell module it is the values of certain internal electronic components that determines the dwell, not the window length. If it were based on window length you would somehow need a window that was about 4 degrees wide at idle and about 13 degrees at 6Krpm.
