Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Hello,
I own a MS2'd Miata turbo and a small 1997 Ford Fiesta (EU) with a DHA Zetec SE 1.25 engine on it. I am thinking of installing a Megasquirt on it as well as I like in on the Miata.
I do have some questions regarding the install and wiring.
First of all I've been reading loads of posts saying about EDIS and how good this is and easy to install and that if you have EDIS you don't need a camshaft sensor for sequential ignition etc. My car however does have a camshaft sensor and has a 3 wire coilpack (wasted spark, grounded to head probably). I think the car is running on EEC-V and I've read on another post that it has EDIS inside the OEM ECU. But I am confused, if it has EDIS then why does it have a camshaft sensor as well? Plus, do I care if it has EDIS or not as long as it has a camshaft sensor?
So the crankshaft sensor is like this one:
And the camshaft sensor is like the following:
and the crank sensor calculates position based on a 36-1 pattern on the flywheel:
The coil pack is like this:
The cam+crank sensors look like they are VR. Will MS2 be able to handle them or will I need one more VR circuit? Is there a patern for this setup (I guess it is like most newer Zetec engines) or will I have to configure it on the trigger options etc?
Thank you in advance!

Hi, thank you for your answer. I have seen your page which gave a lot of helpful info. But I was wondering, since I have a cam sensor, can't I run COPS or am I restricted to Wasted spark?

With the cam sensor, you could run COPs as "wasted COP" which fires them every 360 degrees. This can work, but is running them at double the speed they were designed for.
Or run a wasted spark coilpack.

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Maybe I am not getting something right. I do have crank+cam signal, then why can't I run COPS assuming I have made the mod with WLED and ALED?

You can run sequential COP if you know what the cam trigger profile is. On some engines, it is a single nub on the cam, on the Zetec VCT it is a 5 tooth wheel. I have the latter as I also run the variable cam timing engine.

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Hi and many thanks for your answer! The camshaft has a single tooth that the cam sensor reads. Please check the following picture (the pic is in the future but you get the point ):
At the right bottom you can see the cam sensor and the camshaft tooth. This probably indicates Cyl No1.. If I use a microsquirt do I need to make a second VR sensor for this car? What have you done on yours?
Thanks

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
if you use a microsquirt v3 it already has 2 vr conditioners, so the crank and cam sensors should be fine, however it only has the ability to drive logic level coils so would not be able to drive the ford coil pack with out an external ignition amp, if you get 5v logic level cop's could drive all 4 sequentially using the ign outs and the led's as well, id check the injectors are highZ as the microsquirt can only really drive those.
i think.... the icv on those is a 2 wire pwm type so could drive that as well

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Hello,
Sorry I was on vacation. Many thanks for your answer, that's exactly what I was thinking of. I am planning to use Toyota COPS which are logic level anyway. But are you sure the Ford coils are not logic style? They have a 3 wire connector so must be +12v,GND and Trigger.
As for the ICV you are correct, it is a 2 wire so probably just a solenoid like the one on my Miata so this shouldn't be a problem for MS.
If I want to run sequential injection can I use the JBPerf board? Where do you connect it?
Thank you
Nick

The coilpack you posted a picture of is a high current wasted spark coilpack. It needs an external ignitor to drive it from the Microsquirt. This is covered in the Microsquirt Hardware manual

You can't run sequential injection on a 4-cylinder engine with a Microsquirt because there is no way to have 4 injector channels. And my board won't help with that.

Thank you guys.
Racing mini I see. Can you explain which outputs is your board using on MS2 (not microsquirt)? Is it the Leds?

OK. Does the same apply to the MIcrosquirt Module as well? Can't it be modified to use seq injection?

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
It all depends on your electronic skill level.
The Microsquirt-module is designed for ECU integrators and requires all of the connections to be made.
The "traditional" Megasquirt products can be self assemble if you choose and you would have the option to upgrade it internally to sequential.
The Microsquirt is off-the-shelf pre-assembled and batch fire.

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Yes, I was thinking of an Microsquirt module so I can make a box and include the MAP sensor, maybe baro sensor etc inside and then solder the connections straight to a plug that makes ms pnp on my little car and I can easily swap to the stock ECU.
So if there is a way to do seq injection using the microsquirt module please let me know. Also, does the microsquirt module include the dual VR circuit on its latest version to cope for both my crank and cam signals?
Thank you
Nick

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
I like that paper, thanks James.. However it is not stated if there is a double VR circuit.. So finally is there a way to make it do sequential injection with the microsquirt module?
What I don't understand is the connections needed to the JBPerf board, is there a pinout? I know there should be 2 outputs for Cyls 3 and 4. Inputs are INJ1 and INJ2? How is it powered? I 've read the following page but it isn't clear to me:
http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/docs/sequential.html
Thanks!

Yes, you can use PT6 and PT7.So finally is there a way to make it do sequential injection with the microsquirt module?
There's plenty more information that could be added to that manual, but as the module lower volume, the other varieties are higher priority.

Re: Ford Zetec SE 95-02 hardware (sensors, coils etc)
Thank you James. I did notice it and thought of it a bit after I posted.
Only think left now is to figure out how to connect the module to the PT6 and 7 and how to configure TS.
