5.0 Mercruiser Engine harness adapter connectors?

Post by buick »

Starting a MS3 Pro project for an '04 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI. Looking for suggestion on how to find the ECU like connector pair to build an adapter harness to connect the existing OEM engine harness to a MS3 Pro. Web searches haven't helped yet.

The best option would be to cut them out of a dead OEM ECU.

Good point. I shopped around a little to no avail. Need to find the right "bone yard"

If you find one, get the engine loom too. You can then fit the DB37 to that and swap them over - once you've established you don't need to change back to the original ECU.

Thanks all for the good advice. I'll take a picture of both the harness plugs and ECU mates this weekend.

I have always had good luck with Ballenger Motorsports.

The web sit is easy to use, prices and shipping are reasonable.
The connector can be looked up by number of pins, you can purchase connectors, pins or pig tails.

24-way socket
24-way harness plugs. They have a minimum order of 100pcs (@ $0.80 ea). There is an error on the shipping; I'm pretty sure they don't weigh 15kg each, so the $67ea / $6700/100 is probably a little high ...

That ECU has been marketed as a Mercury Marine or a Mototron ECU, and is currently made by Woodward Controls. Unfortunately, I don't think they were sold as OEM in anything but boats. Interesting trivia - the same thing is sold with somewhat tunable firmware by ProEFI.

Great leads, thanks all. As I looked further , the full 48 pin dual socket set is available as well: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/ECU-car- ... 48914.html. The keying between the two plugs/sockets seem a little different, which of course is a good thing. I don't think I'll need the 24 pin plugs. The plug end will connect to MSPro.

Thoughts on protecting the wiring to the back side of the motorola plug?

How about the pin out for the (qty 2) 24 pin connectors? In viewing numerous manuals, it looks like this computer is called the ECU 555. The pin out does not equate at all to the proefi. I'd hate to only rely on checking each in and out. Any leads are appreciated.

I plan to utilize this connector and enclosure for the wiring harness adapter.

I still do not have the pin-out definition, but have found a few Mercruiser reference docs showing wiring color codes which appear to be consistent for many variants. That'll at least provide some helpful reference in addition to physically checking each connection.

Interesting timing inputs. 180deg window wheel on the distributor for CMP input and essentially four teeth on the crank. Hopefully the connector/ECU enclosure will soon arrive from China.

New connector with enclosure arrived today. And it fits! Also purchased a SELOC manual to decode the wiring harness. Now to measure the crank and distr teeth/window angles.
