VAG coils all even powerfull?

Post by JelmerS38 »

Good day everyone!

My project is putting a Nissan VG30DET engine is my 1983 Datsun Laurel. The engine came from Japan thru an importer so no wiring loom and ECU, no problem offcourse because I already have a Microsquirt. For the ignition I have VAG 036905715F coils. These are from the regular, non turbo 1.2 to 1.6 16v engines. I need real short coils so the (most used) 1.8T coils didn't fit.

Are these 036905715F coils powerfull enough for my engine? It is a 3.0 V6 24v with a single turbo making 256Hp at 0,6 bar boost. My plan is to run 1,2 bar boost.

The std 1.8t coils are good for 100hp per hole, so unless they are wildly different you are good.

I have just bought a set of VW 036905715F coils as I wish to transition from a wasted spark set up to individual coil on plug arrangement. I see that you are using the same coils. Are you able to identify the 4 wires to each coil for me and how you have connected them to the ECU?

The connections seem to be different from the 06B 905 115 coil that is described in the MS3X hardware guide. So far I can have established that: connection 1, heavier brown wire: connection 2, heavier brown with green stripe wire:connection 3, heavier black with purple stripe wire: connection 4, lighter different coloured wire for each coil. There is a 390ohm resistance between connections 1 and 4.

There are a few different pinouts for the 4pin coils, the VW 24v ones sound similar to yours. Usually black/stripe is 12v, brown solid is power ground, brown/stripe is signal/low power ground, varying color is signal.

Thank you for your help. I have done some measurements which are consistent with what you are saying except that the colours of the two earths appear to be swapped around.

Some of VAG-coils measured (primary- and secondary currents).

Thank you for the graphs. Just to be sure, is the top line the secondary circuit and the bottom line the primary circuit?

From the graph, it looks like there is no point in having a dwell time longer than 3.5ms as the primary current is reaching it's maximum. Am I correct?

Yes, bottom = primary current Measured at 14V).

I found coil 036 905 715 too and now some curves...(it is almost the same)

Maybe start dwell little under 2,5ms and put some more if that is not enough.

Yes generally vag coils are fully saturated at ~3.2ms goes for almost any of the VW cop coils.

I appreciate very much the additional information that you both have provided. From my observations around the paddock, there seems to be a willingness to use a longer dwell times in the expectation that more is better. Perhaps, these longer dwell times could explain why they have experienced burnt out coils and misfiring when the dwell times of the coils overlap.
