GPIO as ignition controller.

Post by Bill Shurvinton »

So orthogonal that I am not sure where to put this, but was struck last night by the fact that, having 4 VB921 drivers on boards, the GPIO might make an interesting ignition only controller. There is a real need for something between the MJLjr and a full blown MS setup and this might just be it.

Any thoughts?

I saw a post a while back that someone had taken the MS2/Extra code to use as a basis for GPIO, but he'd ripped out the ignition and fuel stuff.

Seeing as GPIO is the same CPU it would be pretty trivial to modify the MS2/Extra code to use the correct i/o. However we'd have to get the CAN code in place to grab the sensor data.

There are enough analogue inputs such that you could get it working without the CAN.

I am sorely tempted to give it a go, if I could work out a way to go without sleep for a couple of weeks.

I suppose it depends what other inputs you need. If you only need a map sensor and the tach input then I suppose it is fairly simple. If you used an external MAP sensor then board fiddling is pretty much eliminated.

But then you are back to the question of why not get a PCB rolled that has just these features? Or the other question of wouldn't it be better to have a Megasquirt board that has all the required parts from day one?
To use the GPIO as a standalone ignition controller seems feasible but somewhat at a tangent from what it is "supposed" to be used for and could fragment the users even more if some are doing ignition on a spaghetti V3 and others on a GPIO.

Undoubtedly it could be unpopular, but If you could do in on the GPIO platform for less than a V3 with all the mods it would fill a market gap nicely.

Ideally of course I would roll a new board, but that just isn't going to happen with current workload, so I may have a play with this...

bump of an old thread - how can I get a GPIO board in the first place? It seems that it's still in beta and not available to the general public. Looking the pin-outs I figure this can be an option for me if my V3 board is declared broken and dead....
