Alpha test: twin trigger

Post by jsmcortina »

This twin trigger mode is primarily aimed at bikes that use a single tooth on the crank and two VR sensors.

Hi,

Trying to get twin trigger to work in a turbocharged BMW K1100 engine fitted in a Lotus Europa S1.

The stock pickup consists of 2 Hall sensors so I use the opto input on the v3 board and a duplicated input soldered up in the proto area.

The biggest hurdle as of now is that JS10 seems to be configured as an output which is driven low. Ie when i connect the output of the optocoupler to JS10 it drives the optocoupler low.

Im running ms2extra beta 4 (20070707).

I have attached my .msq.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I tried your MSQ on my stim set for even fire twin trigger and I get rpm.

You are rebooting the MS2 after changing the settings aren't you? The port direction is only configured once after a boot.

Thanks for testing out the twin trigger - there may be some bugs in the code, so be methodical and update this topic with any successes or problems you have.

Hello!

My name is Andreas and I am the owner of the car Klas refers to. I made some more in car (engine on floor) tests and this is what i came up with:

As noticed before, the engine triggers about every third time in average. Sometimes it does a few triggers in a row and sometimes it takes several resets. When it triggers, it gives a neat RPM signal at about 230 RPMs.

I then tried to set the trigger offset to match TDC (using a stroboscope) but I couldn´t. With 0-180 degrees on each bank it should be reachable but I found the two banks about only 35 degrees apart. Strange since the sparks appears to be symetric by the eye. I then clocked the sparks to about 2hz while cranking. 230 rpms is about 4hz. My conclusion is each bank fires once every cycle, not every revolution as it should, and not 360 degrees apart but 325 degrees.

One other strange thing is that the spark behaviour is different with a trigger offset between about 80 and 100 degrees. The frequency was doubled (about 4hz) and seemed simultaniously by the eye (could probably be the 35 degrees apart).

Thanks in advance
Andreas

Made a new attempt with the beta6 (20070722) and also looked over my settings. The result was the same. I have attached my msq with the 90 degrees trigger setting (resulting in (almost?) simulatiously firing once per revolution). Any settings I got wrong?

Since I want to get the car running, and can´t change the trigger once the engine is in the car, I will try a missing tooth (slot) wheel to get it started. The wheel is small so I can´t have that many teeth, I´m thinking 4-1 or 6-1. Any suggestions?

I tried your previous MSQ on my stim and it _looked_ ok, so not sure what's going on.

I had a go with my new 6-1 wheel which runs perfectly, also without any reset issues. The engine will now get back into the car so I will not be able to do further twin trigger tests.

Thanks!
