it is not out of the loop, rs232 it's, just buried to the end of the line.
the key here is:
high baud clock, 1megabaud.
accurate clock. ( im sure this is well thought out )
USB , +++ translation
and drivers for all platforms, wndoz, mac, linux.
the USB way is the best way.
we just got to keep track of what chips are solid and which are marginal.
bury the hatchet on RS232,
i will post my HEADER trick.
ever see the little plactic headers that are the opposites of DIP sockets.
sold for over 30 years.
just plug it in. 5v, tx. rx. gnd and go.

Well, i was curious after all of this discussion and pried my usb lead end open here are the pics :
and

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii15 ... 0_6792.jpg
so its a two phase conversion anyway, why not ditch the two uart to rs232 translations and have direct comms between usb and hc9s12? seems like a goer to me :-)

datasheet :
http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/DataS ... T232BL.pdf
it also uses this uart to rs232 driver (a china copy thereof anyway) :
http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-p ... 3ECAI.html
http://www.zywyn.com/htmlsite/products. ... p=2&sid=22
and this atmel 93cs46 serial eeprom (probably holding the identifiers etc in it) :
http://www.futurlec.com/Memory/93C46.shtml
those chips must be available on similar boards out of china for cheaper.
might have to break out the soldering iron, hack the board up, add a socket, and try out the direct uart to uart comms pretty soon :-)

My USB-serial is a Prolific 2303, seems to work ok in Windows and Linux. I've not touched any of the settings. I didn't seek it out, I went into Maplins and it was the only one they sold.
Linux says:
T: Bus=04 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=067b ProdID=2303 Rev= 4.00
S: Manufacturer=Prolific Technology Inc.
S: Product=USB-Serial Controller D
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=100mA
I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=pl2303
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 10 Ivl=1ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=83(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
I'm going to start a topic specifically about working/non-working USB-serial adpaters.

This is good advice.hassmaschine wrote:I set the serial ports up for MS2 manually in windows - I know the megamanual goes into specifics. my firmware flashes take about 3-5 minutes - if it's taking hours then something is wrong. I would start by setting up your serial port per the manual's suggestions.
AbeFM, have you done this yet? Have you tried the standard MS2 code and downloader yet?

Anyone else compared standard code download time?
Anything over a few minutes indicates something is BADLY wrong which needs to be fixed.
