Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Sorry, it is the V5x S12x version you need, I need to stop posting in a hurry.
Try installing the USBDM, it will complain for the proper version, and possibly even attempt to install it for you IIRC.
(ran into this in an attempt to do it in WINE rather than actually have to boot into Windows... CW didn't approve)
I have used mine exactly once and played with it for perhaps two minutes to see how it worked etc.
It did the deed (loading the monitor)in a few seconds with a minimum of fuss.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Ok. The one I ordered is USB based, but has nothing to do with the P&E micro-unit (USB multilink or something). That's, as far as I can see, a total different unit from which I found @ eBay.
I just bought this one, "USBDM":
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110905914350?va ... 1497.l2649
The one I bought uses the firmware that is being updated and listed on the freescale community forums:
https://community.freescale.com/thread/307079
Anyway, I'm excited to see if it's stable and will work without a hassle. If that's the case, It's a good-value option, even for a one-time repair job like I'm doing on my board (hopefully).

Cool, I should probably update my software if it's stand alone now.
I only gave XP 20G on mt Gobook, and CW takes up way too much of the free space.
I suspect they both use the same version of usbdm.

Here's the released monitor file posted earlier, bitworm seems to have eaten it.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Sorry for waking this thread up from the dead, but i need the mon.s19 file if anyone has it. Looking to resurrect my Ms2 daughterboard from the dead after accidentally shorting some pins on the CPU with my multimeter...
A link to a suitable up-to-date reliable BDM would also be appreciated.

B&G still distribute the monitor. http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/code.htm that is the easy part. I used this bdm http://www.evbplus.com/freescale_usbdm_ ... ilink.html

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
That's not the monitor you need to load to a blank chip. That's the B&G MS2 code without the serial monitor. The "monitor" part in the file names comes from the tools they (B&G) use to generate the compiled code (s19 file).slow_hemi6 wrote:B&G still distribute the monitor. http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/code.htm that is the easy part.
There was another thread on this subject where it was mentioned that the serial monitor s19 file is not distributed on the forums or web sites. And that was posted after confirming with B&G.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
I don't mean to be antagonistic or anything but that is not correct. You can load that file onto a blank chip and then upgrade to the MSextra. Ask me how I know. Because I have done it. You can't argue with practical experience.
My experience detailed here http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 98#p361498
If for some reason B&G don't want this to work and don't want to distribute they had better tidy their yard, if you know what I mean.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Are you sure you used the s19 file in your link? If so, I am extremely surprised because what I said about not having the serial monitor in that s19 file is correct. I would understand if you used one of the files that were posted here originally and in some other thread.
If you say it worked for you, fine. But you were part of the discussion in the thread I refer to in my previous post: http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 91&t=61197. So you should not be surprised by my message. You even mention a different file there.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
No it is that file 111kb. I think it is actually the full memory dump inc the monitor regardless of what others have said. If it is not then I must be the patron saint of efi because I know of 3 guys who have resurrected their ms2 successfully doing what I did.

I'm not relying on what anyone has said but simply looking at the file content. I can tell it does not include the serial monitor.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
I did believe it to be different until I actually compared it with what i used to fix my MS2. Same file name and size too. Looks like there is someone willing to try it out anyway. That should sort out whether it works or not.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Just ordered the BDM interface you linked Hemi. So i guess i just need to upload the "Monitor_v2.920.abs.s19" file with the BDM and i should be good to go to upload the MSExtra code the usual way through RS232?slow_hemi6 wrote:I did believe it to be different until I actually compared it with what i used to fix my MS2. When the time comes, do i have to power up the MS2 with the stim or will the BDM provide power for the CPU?

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Stretching my memory but I remember it being programmable from the BDM alone. I may have even had the daughter card removed from the main board at the time. Stim I did use afterwards to load up the current firmware at the time, in the usual manner.
I checked my old xp machine just before and looked at my codewarrior project from the time. No doubt about it now. I used the Monitor_v2.920.abs.s19 file 111kb.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Just to be 100% sure, I re-checked the MS2/BG S19 files and as expected they DO NOT include the serial monitor.
Have a look yourself. The serial monitor starts at 0xF800 and there is NO code for that memory region in the S19.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Well my MS2 was blank when it arrived. It had the 3 leds constantly lit issue. In order to replace the monitor I had to erase the memory before reloading. It is part of the process, so it definitely had to be blank. After loading up the Monitor_v2.920.abs.s19 and installing the extra firmware I have a working MS2. I know of a couple others who did this as well.
I can send you my code warrior project if you want. If my MS has no monitor on it would not work right?

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Not necessarily. The S19 file includes a vector table in the normal place, so it might work.slow_hemi6 wrote: If my MS has no monitor on it would not work right?
Does the boot-jumper work? That would confirm the presence of the serial monitor.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
So to eliminate the risk of ruining, if that's possible, another fine Freescale piece of hardware, is there any way i could get a hold of the proper serial monitor that is sure to do the trick?
Alternatively, can i dump it from another MS2 maybe? I've got a friend that has an MS2 ready for his project, not being used yet.

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Running extra it always does a jumperless boot when I upgrade the firmware. I will have to try out the physical jumper when I can get a chance.jsmcortina wrote:Not necessarily. Any chance this could have something to do with why I have trouble with coms on firmwares over 3.3.1 or is that just because I don't have a FTDI usb to serial?

Re: Blown Chip & Elusive Serial Monitor BDM File
Use BDM to dump 0xf800-0xffff from your friend's MS2. Loading that onto your blank chip should do the trick.kim_gulle wrote:So to eliminate the risk of ruining, if that's possible, another fine Freescale piece of hardware, is there any way i could get a hold of the proper serial monitor that is sure to do the trick?
