[FW MOD] ms2extra 3.2.1 gslender v2.2c

Post by gslender »

MOD EDIT: Note that this firmware is obsolete. Please use the current release firmware from the Downloads page above.

G'day...

This modified firmware is based on the released MS2/Extra 3.2.1, and adds several enhancements designed to improve idle stability during load events, such as AC and other engine loads. See post http://www.msextra.com/forums/viewtopic ... 91&t=43545 for the prior release/s.

This v2.2c update is a release to the mods I've previously added and includes the following changes:
  • Added Idle State logging (to assist with idle tuning).
  • Added Dashpot Decay (MS3 version).
  • Fix for update of IVT with immediate effect (avoiding burn burp).

Maybe just a noobish question, but here it goes:
I tried to check some differences between the 3.2.1 and your msq's, and I saw some odd numbers on the tps filtering or something.

What would I have to do to switch from the 3.2.1 to your's? What changes are needed and mandatory?

Thanks!

No mandatory changes. You should be able to upgrade without enabling anything (I think).

The item I'd encourage you look at would be Adaptive Idle Advance.

Also, read the docs as most stuff is in there re changes and what is needed to enable the features.

I don't use any kind of idle option (raw as it get  )
No sure the idle adaptive stuff would work good with my setup. If if does, it is really good!!
As far as the docs go, I guess I've been reading, but not sure I found what needs to be enabled or not. :P
Thanks!

The "idle adaptive stuff" might work for you - I assume the car does idle somehow, so you only need to enable a "Closed loop idle target rpm" curve (so you'll need to enable PWM Closed-loop even though you don't have a valve) and then create a curve that is applicable (could be a flat idle for all CLT temps).

Then setup Idle Advance and you should see the spark adjust to keep idle dead bang on the idle rpm you want.

Then the only other advice would be to enable Median Sliding Window with a value of 3 across the board and increase all the Lag factors to 90% or higher if you are happy with the filtering. You'll find Median Sliding Window will give you better noise removal and better response than a Lag factor of 50. Some folks (including me) have seen better engine response when under full song because the MAP/RPM bins are more smoothly tracking through the VE table and so you're getting a better and consistent response.

Hi.
Just one question: If I enable the "new" filter, will the old signal filtering factors keep active anyhow?

I assume you mean the Lag factor stuff? If so, yes they are both applied the same time. I've explained how it works here... http://msextra.com/forums/viewtopic.php ... 40#p309355

Well, if that is correct, and even without a valve, I can set it up to "PWM Closed loop" and have it have a dead on idle, that would rock!
My idle is quite ok when warm (1000RPM) but a bit low when cold (600+/-).
I'll have to give it a go.
So basically, set it all to 90 lag, and the new smooth to 3. Sounds easy enough :D
Thanks!

What changes in the app notes from the last notes released? Do you change the content in the app notes or is the same as the beta and v2, v2.1... releases?

thanks Ryan

Things have changed between the releases (as always outlined in the 1st post). The app notes are updated where the new feature requires documenting (as such the current 2.2c app note has been updated).

I installed the firmware, and did another change to the wiring (needed as I was loosing volts when teh lights were turned on)
The car seems to run smoother (not sure the wiring change is the one to "blame") but feels good.
The Idle stuff, I tried to look at it, but there are tooo many parameters to enter, etc, so I have not changed a thing :D
I'll have to try to figure something out.
Other than that, looks good!

Just flashed it in today. Initial impression- very nice!

The sliding window applied to RPM seems to have a significant effect on the responsiveness of both AIA and the PID code! I just used the recommended value of 3, with lag factor set to 90. The data seems to be much more lively-- the difference is really striking! At the same time, no crazy values are coming out. Idle RPM is even more solid now- and I was already happy before this!

Something is still nagging me about the dashpot action with AC. It still seems not to apply dashpot when the AC is on. The dashpot decay seems to only apply with dashpot values of >7. But it looks really promising, have to get some more data on it. Love the logging of engine status and dashpot decay :D

There is a bug in the ms3 code that I've fixed... so should have something soon to correct that.

After checking the logs, it seems that the PW and DutyCycle are steadier, and the AFR is steady as well.
I took some logs the day before going to your firmware, and some with your firmware, and things seem a bit more stable!
I'm enjoying what I'm seeing!
Next step, idle improvement, and I'm all ears to what I need to change (I'm basically out in the blue on this one...)

As mentioned above, you'll need to enable CL PWM to set a CLT rpm target - something to aim for when idling. Then enable the idle advance (adaptive) set for Adder, and then create a curve that goes advance when under rpm, and retard when above rpm. Read the docs for an example.
