Naming: MS2 vs. Megasquirt-2

Post by jsmcortina »

As has been noted elsewhere, I'm (slowly) working on new documentation.

One question that has come to mind is the correct way to refer to the group of products that MS2/Extra runs on.
i.e.
MS2 / Megasquirt-2
Microsquirt
Microsquirt-module

Is the product group "MS2" or "Megasquirt-2" ?
Is the processor card an "MS2" or a "Megasquirt-2" ?

I'm looking for some feedback here about this - the documentation needs a concise way to refer to the group of products and to settings or features that only apply to the daughtercard.

I'll also be sending an email to B&G about this, if they have any strong views it will override forum feedback.

Well, just to make it a bit less obvious the processor card has MSII on the silkscreen. So should the '2' be a 'II'? (This is so not clear when using a sans-serif font as on the forum.)

I've always thought MS1 & 2 referred to the processor. Since you can have an MS1 v2.2 or V3, and an MS2 v3 or 3.57. I'm lost outside of those. :D

Hi James,

In France I use to make a difference between MS2 and MicroSquirt. If I don't, people get lost because they think MS2 and MicroSquirt are 2 different products (and they are).

So when I make tutorials or docs, I double them with just replacing names in regard with the product I speak about.

But when I deal with MS2/extra firmwares, I use to call the hadware 'MS2 processor' with a single note on top of document that remind the 'MS2 processor' products (MS2, MicroSquirt, µMS Module).

At least, I prefer MegaSquirt 2 because it's more know here than MS2. Some short this name as 'Mega'.

Best regards,
Manu

I can see the logic there.

Bruce hath spoken.

"Megasquirt-2" is the family name. So "MS2" refers to ECUs using an MS2 daughtercard.

I would refer megasquirt 2 as the complete ecu and ms2 would be the chip itself to keep it simple

No need for any more replies - Bruce has already confirmed the naming we are going to use.
