MAF for a single cylinder

When during the engine cycle is MAF sampled? I'm having ideas of fitting a modded ford MAF to a small single 4 stroke. I'd assume you'd want to sample right at peak velocity on the intake stroke. Or a series of samples to find the highest reading or even average them together. Could the intake pulse also be used for starting sequential mode like map sampling does? What flexibility is there in the code with MAF?
