K series VVC engine - controlling the VVC

Post by oliverracing »

Hi, I'm new here so hope I'm in the right area, if not let me know!

I have a GTM kit car which has a rover K-Series engine with their VVC system on it, the stock ECU has died so rather than replacing stock with stock I'm looking at replacing with a megasquirt. One problem I'm having is determining whether the ECU can control the VVC mechanism, which is a mapped solenoid controlled system. I know it can do Honda V-tec but that is simply on or off .

I have been suggested that I could use the boost pressure mapping to do this but was wondering if anyone has tried this with any success.

Thanks
Oliver :D

I'm not aware of anyone controlling this yet. A year or so ago, I looked into some of the technical details and it appeared to be mappable like VVT with the correct control. It isn't necessarily trivial either.

How common is this engine in kit cars? (i.e. is there a big potential market.)

Where are you located?

James

It was quite popular for a while some years ago - but head gasket problems on the larger versions never really got solved. And scrap yard sources have likely dried up - although I believe it's still used by the Chinese MGs.
