Just how accurate does the 60 degree before tdc and to the sensor does the wheel really need to be? If I weld mine in place and it's a bit off... can I adjust it in firmware?

I presume you are talking wheel decoder in MS1/Extra here ? Please do be specific.
Simply adjust the trigger angle until the displayed advance in Megatune matches the strobed advance.
This is best confirmed by setting a "Fixed" advance e.g. 15BTDC.
Trim is used to adjust the whole table while testing and should be zero in normal operations.
