Cannot figure out how trigger MSII

Post by brownquirt »

SPECS:

Single cylinder, 4 stroke

magneto w/ autometer tach adapter pn#9118 gives about double RPM (current and best signal)

VR sensor w/ 1 tooth trigger wheel gives 30-40k rpm

MSII code 2.35

megatune 2.25

v3 board

setup for hall sensor

TRIED:

Everything i could search, besides the gm 7 pin hei

I guess my quesstion is can I run fuel only, even though the the rpms are double? Also when the engine is runnning the LED appears to flash when the plug fires, and does not corrospond with rpms in megatune.

Also, I'm guessing MSII will work correctly using the autometer to trigger it, since it would trigger the same time as with triggering off the negative side of the coil?

Any help is appreciated!

You say you have a VR Sensor , does it provide a signal to anything else ?

Is it part of the "Mag" system ?

If one side of the VR Sensor is definitely grounded ,
you can run MS off of it in parallel with anything it is already
connected to , or , is there room to mount a second VR Sensor
next to the trigger wheel ? if you can do this it would be ideal .

Use the VR input of MS if you try this .

Magnetos with Tach adaptors are notoriously unstable and are not really
good or clean enough to run any F.I. Computer .

What do you mean by "gives 30-40k rpm" ,
does this mean your engine runs in the 15 to 20,000 rpm range ?

What kind of an engine is this , besides "Single Cylinder 4 Stroke"
Could be a lawnmower engine with MegaSquirt !!!

When you say Magneto , are you talking about an
"under the flywheel exciter coil" on a motorcycle engine ?
or a stand alone separate Magneto , like a distributor .

Does this engine have Points Ignition ?
or is the ignition controlled by the VR Sensor and a module ?

Is the entire ignition system contained under the flywheel ?
What parts are accessible ?

What provides power for your MS ?
Do you have a battery ?
Is the voltage well regulated between 12 and 14 volts ?

To try to answer your questions ,

You CAN run fuel only even though the input is doubled ,
all of your Tables will have to be setup with the doubled rpm numbers ,
however ,
since the numbers are doubled this puts the "stability" of those numbers
into serious question ,
if these numbers "jump around" some it's no big deal on a Tach ,
any fuel injection computer has got to have
a rock solid stable tach input to operate reliably .
If your Tach is not working right , MS probably won't work right either .

If the rpms are double on your AutoMeter Tach the adaptor may not
be correct for your aplication , it could be designed for 12 volt input and
the "Mag" could be putting out 5 times that voltage .

Do you have a Wiring Diagram of your Ignition System ?
I'd like to see it .

Have you thought about letting MS drive the Ignition Coil ? if so , MS can
also drive your Tach (at the correct RPM) .

There are alot of advantages to letting MS control the Ignition Timing .

Gimmie some more information and I can probably help you out .

Any and all info is important , is this a Drag Bike or a lawn mower ?

I really appreciate the reply! I did figured it out. I ended up trigger off the magento and changing the constants to 2 cylinder. works great now!
