Dumb question I know, but are your plugs fouled ?
I was havving a symilar issue with hard starts and running rich, eventually fouled out the plugs so bad it wouldnt fire at all, changed them and it li right off.

Hey norguy ,

Want a guaranteed , fire on the first crank , ignition setup ?

Install a Ford EDIS setup , the hardest part is mounting the wheel to your
damper and making a mount for the VR sensor .

The setup in MS is simple and well documented .

If you are not running a Blower you don't need the MSD-6 .

If you are , MSD makes a box for the EDIS system , just plugs in .
($400.00 ouch!!!)

My MS install fired on the first crank and i was driving the car in an hour .
I used a junkyard EDIS Module and Coil Pack ,
I made the VR Sensor mount out of a chunk of 1/4" aluminum and 3/8" threaded rod ,
I had a machine shop cut 35 notches in my Damper ,
total cash outlay , about 75 bucks .
(plus $100 for new spiral core spark plug wires and EDIS Boots )

Bonus ! No more Spark Scatter from Timing Chain and Dizzy slack !

If my HEI didn't drive the oil pump and
plug a hole in the block I'd throw it away .

By the way , I used to run a 4 pin HEI module , mounted separately ,
to run my Timing Computers (2) and MSD-6 ,
it had a 2 watt 680ohm "pull-up" resistor , ran great for 6 years .

After thoroughly going over the MS web site , I picked EDIS ,
even though I already had a perfectly good Ignition System .

It was worth it .
